Another Canadian Connection on 24
I was watching the second 2 hour episode of 24 on Monday night and I realized that I recognized one of the key guest stars.
I don’t want to say too much in case you missed the episode, so if you haven’t seen the episode perhaps don’t read this post, or go over to Watching 24 and read Aaron’s recap first, and then come back and read what I have to tell you about the terrorist.
So I’m watching the episode and my husband reminded me that “that guy from “This Hour has 22 Minutes”" a Canadian weekly comedy had said he was going to be on 24. So we’re watching and we see him in the line up of prisoners. (Again I’m not explaining the scenes as I’ll leave that to Aaron - go visit Watching 24 to read his recap). The camera’s panned by him in the line up several times so we figured that his role was about to expand. Little did we know just how much it was about to expand!
As it turned out, late in the first half of the two hour episode we learned that the terrorist attacking the USA this time round had secured a Russian Suitcase bomb - all had been destroyed in the late 80s but it had been rumored that one bomb hadn’t been accounted for, and that it had been diverted to a nuclear scientist with suspected terrorist ties.
The only name that US intelligence had for this scientist was Siad Faldin, which apparently means “Sword of Faith”. Luckily Jack Bauer happens to have a terrorist, Assad, with him who recognizes one of the only photos that the CTU has of this Siad Faldin and he identifies him as Hassan Numar.
As it turns out, the scientist/ terrorist, is a Canadian Comedian. His real name is Shaun Majumder. If you go to Youtube.com and do a search for 22 minutes or this hour has 22 minutes I’m sure you’ll find some funny sketches with him in it. He’s hilarious, so it was very strange to see him playing a serious role.
Majumder, is a gemini award winning actor/comedian. For those that don’t know - the Gemini’s are kind of the Canadian version of the People’s Choice Awards. His credits include feature films “Harold & Kumar go to White Castle”, “The Ladies Man”, “Pushing Tin”, and “Purpose”.
He’s a regular cast member on This Hour has 22 Minutes (see video sketches of him on the 22 minute site), and as I’m describing his roles have also included Fox’s 24, as well as Relic Hunter, and John Woo’s Once a Thief. He’s also been a regular cast member on Cedric the Entertainer Presents and Hatching, Matching & Dispatching.
Shaun is also a regular performer and favorite of Montreal’s Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, and he has hosted the Just for laughs Comedy series on the Comedy Channel for three seasons. He’s currently living in Los Angeles.
BTW I titled this post another Canadian connection, because of course Kiefer Sutherland is Canadian.
