House and other medical TV shows used to teach students
I came across an interesting article on the internet that says that now that shows like House, Grey’s Anatomy, And CSI are so popular with teenagers that one school teacher, Melanie Toth actually tapes episodes of the show to show her science class on Fridays:
Science teacher Melanie Toth takes advantage of the medical aspect of these popular shows, and finds episodes of either “CSI or “House to show on Fridays that relate to her AP biology class’ current unit.
Medical television series help students understand current topics in the class curriculum, Toth says. “I use [the shows] to supplement teaching lessons. Students can see how technical class information is addressed in everyday settings. In other words, you need to understand science to communicate with doctors and understand the news, [or] legal issues.
I think that’s wonderful that she’s combining popular TV with the courses she teaches her students.
