There was an article in Sundays Post-Gazzette.com about actors and how they’ve managed to either overcome their native accents to play grand roles, or develop new accents - and how some are horrible at it.
Here’s the excerpt from that mentions Hugh Laurie:
The most successful current TV import is Hugh Laurie, who perfectly masks his natural British accent as a cranky but brilliant American doctor on Fox’s “House.”

There’s also an article in Sundays Chicago Tribune about Three actors who found their niche. Here’s what they had to say about our beloved Hugh Laurie:
Perhaps you never heard of Hugh Laurie prior to the debut of Fox’s “House.” Unless you caught his turns in the classic British comedies “Blackadder” and “Jeeves and Wooster,” and his small roles in films such as “Sense and Sensibility,” you’d be entirely unaware of Laurie’s career as a comic actor, one who specialized in portraying upper-class Brit nitwits.
So who would’ve thought he’d be so riveting as the eternally angry Dr. Gregory House? Laurie brings a fierceness to the role that one would have never predicted from his past work. He never shies away from giving his all to House’s less likable acts and statements, and the character has not softened into a somewhat likable grouch. He’s still a genuine curmudgeon who pops pain pills like M&Ms. But it’s a bonus that Laurie’s ample comic gifts make House’s cutting wit such fun to watch.
