Hugh Laurie named officer of the Order of the British Empire
The Queen of England bestowed honours on a number of people who have contributed to society in a signifigant manner. Those awarded incude Actors - Hugh Laurie, actresses, business men James Dyson the inventor of the bagless vacuum, sportsmen and musicians such as Rod Stewart - towards making signifigant contributions towards society.
In addition to doling out Knighthoods to several honourees, 971 people were listed as receiving the right to wear the new lapel badge, which was announced on December 30th. The pink and gray emblem will be available to 120,000 living recipients in all.
“These new emblems are a visible sign of a person’s accomplishments, and I hope that many will choose to wear them with pride,” said Gus O’Donnell, the civil servant who as Cabinet Secretary oversees honors. “This is an important step in increasing awareness and understanding of the honors system.”
Apparently the system has been under scrutiny. The police have been investigating whether Prime Minister Tony Blair was selling places in the upper house of Lords. Men who had donated money to the Labour Party were nominated for seats in the chamber. Everyone since 1997 who donated more than 1 million pounds to labour has been knighted or named a member of the House of Lords, since 1997.
Hugh Laurie, the British star of the U.S. medical drama “House” is named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Johnny Briggs, who plays Mike Baldwin in the long- running British soap opera “Coronation Street,” is a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
