“Ugly” Recap
Opens with a father talking on a cell and a little girl starts screaming – it turns out to be the “ugly? boy, Kenny, coming to Houston Plainsboro Teaching Hospital to have his surgery. He says that it’ll be just 36 more hours until he’s “just another face in the crowd. He’s on the operation table with Dr. Chase getting ready to do the surgery. Unfortunately for Kenny, he goes into v-fib.
Back from commercial and House is staring into the camera while Chase explains to Cuddy that there is a pacing wire on Kenny’s heart. They can’t figure out what’s going on with Kenny, so he’s taking over Kenny’s care.
House: I will see you again, after I have saved his life – have a warm bath waiting.
Cuddy explains that the production company is paying for the surgery, so they have to stay. Into the lecture hall come the cameras and Dr. House, who decides to take the fellows on a walk!
House: Let’s go for a walk – walks look good on camera. They give the illusion of the story moving forward.
In order to keep the rest of the story a secret from the West Coast (and foreign coast readers), I’ve put the rest under the more tag - click more to see what happened on tonight’s episode!
House takes the crew into the MRI room so that the cameras can’t follow. While the fellows are trying to diagnose, cutthroat bitch is complaining about Michael Michele being on the team. House thinks that the kid has been huffing and asks the team to do some tests.
In Wilson’s office, House seems confused.
House: I think she might be an idiot. She can’t be an idiot – she was in the CIA for God’s Sake.
Wilson: The Bay of Pigs was a daring triumph.
Kutner did testing on Kenny and didn’t find any evidence of huffing – which he tells House inside an operating room so that the camera crew can’t come in. (This is getting interesting – watching the places House is finding to hide from the camera crew). The camera crew, meanwhile, complains to Cuddy, who says that House always diagnoses in a variety of places. House suggests doing a DP study, which apparently means that they have to stop Kenny’s heart (which Kutner thinks is cool).
Taub talks to Kenny and discovers that he’s not doing drugs – right after the conversation, Kenny vomits blood. The crew is diagnosing in cuddy’s office and once again, Michael Michele gives a bad answer. Taub doesn’t want to do the test House suggests because he believes that Kenny has liver damage, which would cause problems. The camera crew is in Wilson’s office.
Wilson: Obviously it was a witch hunt.
Camera Lady: You think they singled him out?
Wilson: No, literally a witch hunt – Dr. House is a practicing Wiccan. It’s a beautiful religion.
House tells Wilson that Michael Michele is making him stupid.
Wilson: Ask her out. It’s the story of life – boy meets girl, boy gets stupid, boy and girl live stupidly ever after.
Diagnosing and AGAIN Michael Michele gives a bad answer. The camera crew heads down to Dr. Cameron.
Camera Lady: So you left because you hate Dr. House?
Cameron: No, no, I love Dr. House.
She then seemed to realize what she said and tried to change her answer a bit. More testing and Taub discovers that he’s right, because there is a lot of pressure in his brain. House believes that Kenny has junior rheumatoid arthritis. He wants to give Kenny steroids, but Taub believes that House is wrong. He tells the father that he thinks that House is wrong and that he can get House thrown off the case.
Taub and House are in front of Cuddy. Cuddy agrees that Taub went over the line, but says that he’s not fired, even though House says he is. Cuddy says that no one is fired while the cameras are there. She tells House to give Kenny an MRI to see if Taub’s idea was right or not. Taub tells Foreman during the MRI procedure that he saw a regular kid when he looked at Kenny.
Taub: One thing about being a plastic surgeon – you don’t see what is…you see what could be.
Cut to House in a plastic surgeon’s office, with the plastic surgeon saying, “So, tell me what you don’t like about yourself.? (sound familiar? It’s a line from an FX show: Nip/Tuck!) House asks for Taub – he’s trying to discover why Taub left the plastic surgery office. He discovers only that Taub left for personal reasons.
House talked to Taub’s wife, however, and figured out that Taub cheated on his wife with a nurse, which led him to leaving the practice. Cuddy says that she can’t find the anomaly and gives House the go-ahead to give steroid treatment. And so House heads into Kenny’s room.
House: Wow – you’re ugly.
Kenny: Wow – you’re an ass. I have an anomaly.
House: I know – that’s what makes you ugly. But you’re a lucky boy. Anywhere else in the animal kingdom, your parents would have eaten you at birth.
House tells the father and Kenny that they should take the steroids. House and Wilson sneak into the editing room in order to look at some of the tape and so that Wilson can help House figure out if he’s an idiot over Michael Michele. And yes – he is!
House: I can’t believe I’m that guy.
Dr. Wilson: Every guy is that that guy.
House: I’m not every guy.
Dr. Wilson: What is this, semantics here? All guys are that guy.
House: I’m not all guys!
Cameron is practicing a speech in the mirror where she “qualifies what I already qualified? about loving Dr. House. Chase is behind her and looks less than amused.
Taub is making a last ditch effort to get House to believe in his diagnosis. House agrees with him, but then when they go into Kenny’s room, he shows that his treatment has worked and Kenny’s all better…until he sees Kenny’s little finger twitching. The little finger twitching means that House is wrong on his diagnosis (which has NEVER happened before LOL).
Taub, however, believes that House has issues about the surgery, and that he just wants to stop the surgery.
Taub: You’re not normal, so you don’t want anybody else to be normal. You don’t think normal’s healthy.
Taub asks House to take the pacing leads off of Kenny to see if his heart is fine. If he’s not, the heart will stop.
House: Kutner – have the paddles on standby. Another chance to blow someone up.
Taub removes the pacing leads, and Kenny’s fine! Kenny gets wheeled down to surgery and House isn’t convinced that his diagnosis is right. Thirteen decides to hang around for the surgery and is there when Chase is explaining to the camera crew how the surgery will go down. Thirteen notices on the photos that there was no blackening near Kenny’s hairline 3 weeks ago, which means that something’s definitely not right.
Thirteen tells House that Kenny does have lime disease – that the rash is hiding because no one ever looked at him closely enough. When they shave his hair off, they find the rash.
In the lecture hall, House corners Taub again. He discovers that Taub has a non-compete clause, which means that he risked the job with nothing to stand back on. He doesn’t fire Taub, though – he fires Michael Michele!
House and Cuddy are in her office watching an early copy of the movie that was being made. Turns out the film crew used little pieces of his dialogue, making him look like a saint!
House: Suddenly I don’t feel like I can trust Michael Moore movies.
Cuddy turns the movie back on when House leaves to see a “fixed? Kenny.
Film Lady: Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Kenny: Thank you Dr. House. Thank you.
